Hi, I'm Zane. I'm 15, and I'm the one in the family who likes numbers. My dad says I "turn everything into a spreadsheet." He's not wrong. Last week I calculated the exact solar panel wattage you'd need to run a chest freezer off-grid in Maricopa County based on average daily sun hours by month. For fun. My brothers think I'm weird. I think they're missing out.
I built a weather station in our backyard when I was 11. It tracks temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, wind speed, and rainfall. I log all of it. Every day. I've got over two years of data now, and I can predict afternoon monsoons in our area about 80% of the time just by watching the morning pressure readings. The National Weather Service is right about 84% of the time, so I'm getting close.
My favorite thing in survival is navigation. Maps, compasses, GPS, celestial navigation — I love all of it. There's something satisfying about being able to figure out exactly where you are using nothing but a map, a compass, and some math. Most people rely on their phone for directions. Your phone battery dies in 8-12 hours of heavy use. A compass never runs out of battery. That's just math.
I also write about solar power, water filtration systems, and off-grid technology. These are systems you can actually calculate and optimize. How many gallons of water does your family need per day? (Answer: about 1 gallon per person for drinking, 3-5 gallons total when you include cooking, hygiene, and sanitation.) How many solar panels to go fully off-grid? I know I get a little too deep into the details sometimes. My mom tells me to "get to the point" and my dad says to "save some for the next article." But I think the details matter. If you're building a water filtration system, you should know the micron rating of your filter, the flow rate, and how many gallons it handles before replacement. That's not being nerdy. That's being prepared.
