The Mastery of Fire
There is no woodcraft skill more fundamental than the ability to build a fire — quickly, reliably, and appropriately — under any conditions that the forest can present. The man who can build a fire in driving rain, with wet wood and a single match, is a man who will not die of cold in the wilderness. The man who can only start a fire with dry kindling in fair weather and a heap of newspaper is a man who has been living in town too long and has forgotten — or never learned — what the outdoors requires.
But fire-building is not merely a survival technique. It is a craft. The campfire that serves its purpose — whether as a cooking fire, a warming fire, a signal fire, or simply a companion in the evening woods — is the product of judgment, preparation, and a thorough understanding of how wood burns and how fire behaves. Each purpose calls for a different fire. Each fire calls for a different lay and a different fuel. The skilled camper does not build the same fire twice when twice he has needed different things from it.
Tinder: The Foundation of Every Fire
The fire begins before the match is struck, in the preparation of tinder. Tinder is the finest, most combustible material you can provide — so fine that a single match held to it produces immediate ignition. The failure to prepare adequate tinder accounts for more botched fires than any other single cause.
The best natural tinders of the forest:
Birch bark is the finest natural fire-starter in the northern forest. The outer layer, which can be peeled in thin papery sheets from any birch tree without harming it, contains oils that ignite readily and burn hot even when slightly damp. Crumple or shred several sheets into a loose ball before applying the match. In the wet season, birch bark often ignites when all other tinder fails.
Pine fatwood is the resin-saturated heartwood found at the base of dead pine stumps and in dead pine knots. Where live resin has concentrated over years of decay, the wood becomes nearly incombustible from moisture while burning like a candle from the oils it contains. Split pine knots and dead stump butts with the axe and examine the color — reddish-orange wood dripping visible resin is fatwood. Shave thin slivers with your knife into a pile of fine curls: these ignite easily and sustain a flame long enough to catch even reluctant tinder.
Dry leaves and fine dead grass are dependable in fair weather and unreliable in wet. Gather from the driest, most sheltered locations available — the interior of a dead brush pile, the underside of a large log, the hollow of a dead tree.
Dry fungus (tinder fungus, amadou) is the camper's fire-starting secret. The bracket fungus that grows on dead birch trees, dried thoroughly and carried in a dry container, catches a spark before any other material. Keep a piece in a tin in your kit.
Carry Your Tinder on Your Person
The woodsman who keeps his tinder in his pack has tinder that is subject to the same conditions as everything else — rain, dew, immersion. The woodsman who keeps a small tin of prepared tinder in his breast pocket, closest to the warmth of his body, has tinder that is reliably dry under almost any conditions. A small altoids tin lined with dry birch bark curls and fatwood shavings, carried always in the shirt pocket, costs nothing and has started many a critical fire in wet weather.
Fire Lays
Different purposes require different fire construction. The novice camper builds the same fire for every task — typically a towering structure of thick logs that produces more smoke than heat, burns through its fuel in an hour, and is entirely unsuited to cooking. The experienced camper builds the fire to serve the immediate purpose.
The Tepee (Cone Fire): Stack kindling and small sticks in a cone shape over a central bundle of tinder, with a gap on the windward side for draft. The tepee fire concentrates heat upward and ignites quickly. It is an excellent fire for getting a blaze started, for boiling water rapidly, and for generating quick warmth after a wet day. Its disadvantage is that it burns through its fuel quickly and requires frequent feeding.
The Log Cabin (Crisscross) Fire: Build a square framework of progressively larger logs, crisscrossed like the walls of a log cabin, with tinder and kindling in the center. The log cabin fire produces a long-lasting bed of coals — the finest cooking fire. As the inner kindling catches and the framework logs begin to burn and collapse, they feed the coals. A well-built log cabin fire will sustain a deep coal bed for an hour with no attention.
The Trench Fire: Dig a trench six inches deep, six inches wide, and two feet long, oriented perpendicular to the prevailing wind. Build the fire in the trench. The trench concentrates heat upward under a cooking pot placed across the trench opening and creates a natural draft. It is the most fuel-efficient cooking fire in the woodsman's repertoire — a particularly valuable fire when wood is scarce or when the smoky fire that signals your camp to others is undesirable.
The Reflector Fire: Build a substantial fire in front of a vertical surface — a rock face, a cliff, or a wall of stacked green logs. The vertical surface reflects heat back toward the camp. For a lean-to camp, build the fire six to eight feet in front of the open shelter face, with a green log wall behind the fire on the far side from the shelter. This double arrangement — reflector behind the fire, open shelter ahead of it — captures the fire's heat with remarkable efficiency and makes a lean-to comfortable on nights when a tent would be merely tolerable.
For reflector baking — cooking biscuits, bread, or fish in a reflector oven — build a tepee or log cabin fire that produces tall, bright flames (not the low, dense coal fire suited to other cooking). The oven is positioned to face the vertical wall of flame, not the coals. The bright flame radiates intensely enough to bake at a useful rate.
Match Your Fire to Its Purpose
The most common campfire mistake is building a single large fire and attempting to do everything with it. A raging bonfire is miserable to cook over and wasteful of fuel. A cook fire should be small, hot, and held together — a modest log cabin over a good coal bed, with room to suspend the pot over the coals or nestle it among them. Save the large, bright fire for warmth and light in the evening. Build the cook fire as if fuel is rationed, because in a long camp, it is.
Fire in Wet Conditions
Rain, damp, and saturated wood do not prevent fire — they require preparation and patience. The man who gives up when the tinder is damp has simply not yet developed the skills.
Preparation is the key. In wet weather, prepare tinder before you need it, while conditions permit. Split large logs to access the dry interior wood. Shave thin kindling from the split interior face — the outside of a log may be saturated while the interior is entirely dry. Birch bark and fatwood are your first resort.
Build a small, dry platform for your fire from split wood. Ground damp and rain splash will soak a fire built directly on wet ground. Two or three split sticks laid side by side, with the tinder on top, provide insulation from the ground moisture.
Protect the match. Strike the match inside your cupped hands, facing away from the wind. Do not remove the match from its sheltered space until the tinder is solidly catching.
Feed slowly and steadily. A struggling fire in wet conditions cannot absorb large fuel. Begin with the finest tinder and advance to progressively larger material only as the fire establishes itself. The instinct to pile fuel on a struggling fire is the instinct that kills it. A fire that is beginning to die wants air and fine dry fuel — not more large logs.
The Axe: The Woodsman's Essential Tool
I have carried many tools into the woods in the course of a long camping life, and I have returned without most of them, having concluded that they were unnecessary. The axe I have always brought back. It is the one tool for which no substitute exists and for which no combination of smaller tools compensates.
The axe fells small trees for shelter poles and ridgepoles. It splits firewood to the size the fire demands. It drives tent pegs into hard ground. It blazes trail and marks camp boundaries. It builds a lean-to from standing timber. It processes game when nothing else is at hand. In winter camps, it is the difference between shelter and hypothermia.
Selecting the right axe:
The camper's axe is not the woodsman's full axe and not the logger's felling axe. It is a light, single-bit axe — two and a half to three pounds with the handle — balanced for one-handed use but substantial enough to split firewood efficiently. The three-pound axe is the largest any camper should carry; heavier than this and the axe becomes a burden rather than a tool.
The poll (the back of the head) should be solid and well-tempered — suitable for driving pegs with controlled tapping. The blade should hold an edge through an afternoon's hard use without constant dressing.
The handle is as important as the head. The wood should be straight-grained hickory or ash, free of knots in the grip area, and the right length for the user — a handle too long creates an unwieldy lever; too short and it concentrates impact forces uncomfortably. The traditional test: with the axe hanging loosely at arm's length, the knob of the handle should sit at the wrist. This gives approximately the right length for most users.
A Dull Axe Is More Dangerous Than a Sharp One
This is the most important single statement in this chapter, and it bears repeating: a dull axe is a dangerous axe. A dull blade glances off wood rather than cutting it — sending the axe head on an unpredictable path that may end in your shin, your foot, or your companion's. A sharp axe cuts into wood and stops where it should stop. Sharpen your axe before every day's hard use. Carry a mill bastard file and a whetstone. Five minutes of sharpening every morning saves not only effort but risk of serious injury.
Safe axe use:
Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and slightly outside the arc of the axe swing. The chopping block should be at a comfortable height — approximately knee to mid-thigh for splitting. For limbing a downed log, work from the far side so that a glancing stroke goes into the log, not toward you.
The grip: Loose enough to allow the hands to slide during the stroke, firm at contact. Both hands on the handle for powerful strokes; the lower hand starts near the knob and rises slightly during the downswing as the upper hand controls direction.
Splitting: Read the wood. Split along the grain, not across it. Look for checks (natural cracks) and split along them. Knotty sections resist splitting — work around the knots or use a larger, heavier stroke.
Camp Kitchen Setup
The camp kitchen is not an accident — it is a deliberate arrangement that determines how pleasant and efficient cooking will be for the duration of the camp.
Establish the kitchen on the downwind side of the camp. Cooking smoke blown through sleeping and living areas is a preventable misery. Position the fire so the prevailing wind carries smoke away from the main camp.
The cooking fire should be separate from the warming fire if both are needed. A large warming fire is wasteful to cook over and produces excessive smoke. The cooking fire is compact, hot, and controlled.
Pot supports: Two green logs of uniform diameter, placed parallel, support cooking pots over the fire without specialized equipment. They should be close enough together to support the pot's base, far enough apart to allow the fire to breathe beneath. Prop the logs on rocks or chunks of wood to maintain height as the fire builds and subsides.
Cutting and preparation surfaces: A flat-topped log, a large flat rock, or a plank from the equipment serves as the cutting board and working surface. Keep it away from the fire — grease and wood chips from food preparation are fire hazards.
Washing up: Water for washing should come from downstream of your water source and waste water should be disposed of well away from both the camp and the water source. In a long camp, establish a permanent disposal site downhill from the kitchen.
Campsite Selection
The difference between a good camp and a miserable one begins before the first stake is driven. The selection of the campsite determines, more than any other single factor, how comfortable the camp will be.
Water: The camp must be within easy reach of good water — but not so close that flooding is a risk in heavy rain, and not in a low-lying area where the stream's humidity saturates everything within range. Fifty to a hundred yards from the water source is generally the right compromise.
Drainage: Choose a site with a slight, natural slope. Rain that falls on the camp should run off it, not collect in it. Flat ground that looks dry in fair weather becomes a lake in a downpour. Look for ground with enough slope to move water but not so much as to make sleeping uncomfortable.
Wind protection: A natural windbreak — a ridge, a stand of dense conifers, a rock face — to the prevailing weather side makes all the difference in cold or stormy weather. Observe the vegetation; trees leaning away from the prevailing wind or with asymmetric crowns tell you the direction of the dominant weather.
Overhead hazard: Dead standing trees — the woodsman's "widow-makers" — are invisible killers in a wind. Inspect the overhead canopy before committing to a site. A dead tree leaning toward your camp in a windstorm is not a problem you want to discover at two in the morning.
Firewood availability: Wood must be within reasonable distance. The man who establishes a long camp and exhausts the nearby firewood in the first three days will spend the remainder of his time hauling it from increasing distances.
Kephart's Campsite Checklist Works as Well in 2024 as in 1906
The five elements Kephart identified — water, drainage, wind protection, overhead safety, firewood — have not changed because the forest has not changed. Modern campers face the same selection criteria, though today we add proximity to the trailhead, bear country food storage requirements, and Leave No Trace considerations. Kephart's framework is still the correct starting point for any campsite evaluation, whether you are pitching a tarp or an ultralight tent.
The light camp vs. the heavy camp: The one-night bivouac requires only the most basic site assessment — level enough to sleep, no obvious overhead hazard, water accessible. The week-long base camp deserves a full afternoon's survey before committing. The investment in selecting the right site is paid back in comfort for every day of the camp's life.
