the names imply, are a combi- nation of insufficiencies. The four preceding tables will eicplftin these combinations. Insufficiency of the Externi. To delermine insufficiency of the externi, place a prism of 10° before the right eye, Ihe apex up. Ask the subject to look at a light twenty feet distant ; two lights will be seen. The upper light will be projected on Ihe right side of a perpendicular second prism over Ihe left eye, apex in, \i'hich will bring the the insufficiency, or esopkoria. Insufficiency of Left Inf. Rectus, or Right Sup. Rectus (Ijfi Hyperphoria). To delermine insufficiency of the left inf. or right sup. rechi-!, a prism of sufficient strength to cause marked diplopia is placed, base in, before Ihe righl eye. The light on the patient's right will be projected above the hori- zontalline. Patient is directed to look at a par- ticular object and apparently sees two (diplopia). The diplo- pia disappears by turning the head to the left when the right internus is affected, and to the right when the left is affected. 3. If told to follow the finger, the eye affected will lag behind when THE FINGER IS MOVED OVER, AND ON THE SIDE OF THE AF- FECTED MUSCLE. All of the muscles supplied by the third nerve are usually more or less affected. Not infrequently the branch which supplies the ciliary muscle is alone a£fected, causing /ara/v« J of accommoda- tion. Paralysis of all the external mus- cles of the eye is termed Oph- thalmopUgia Externa. Treatment Is directed to the Paralysis or Paresis of the Ex- ternal Rectus Muscle. (Par- alysis of the sixth nerve J. 1. Homonymous Diplopia. (See page 83.) 2. Patient is directed to look at a par- ticular object, and apparently sees two (diplopia) . The diplo- pia disappears by turning the head toward the affected muscle. (Muscle is then completely re- laxed). 3. If told to follow the finger tip, the eye affected will lag behind when the finger is moved over and on the side of the affected muscle (Paralytic squint).
